First and Foremost we expect every playtester to have fun at each of the BMG events. However, we also ask that you give our designers the best feedback possible.
So, here are some guidelines on how to be a good playtester (click on each guideline for details)
Be honest and forthcoming
Designers want to know what you think of their game and they need the truth, so please don't be afraid to voice your opinion.
Don't be afraid to ask for a feedback form
Designers want your feedback, so if for any reason you aren't able to voice your opinion at the table, please fill out a form. If you want your feedback to be anonymous, hand it to the event organizer making sure to have the game name or designer's name on the form.
Always be constructive
Whether you have praise or criticism, always give the designer details about why you felt one way or another. Additionally, if you do find an issue, designers really appreciate suggestions on how to alleviate said issues.
Games that come to BMG are at various stages of development, some of which may be very rough or not to your preference. If things aren't going well, please do not storm off. Tell the designer your issues and, if need be, ask the designer to end the playtest early.
Don't expect to change the World
Everyone has their own opinions on game design and what they want a game to be. Just because a designer doesn't immediately embrace an idea, doesn't mean the idea was bad. More often than not the designer just wants to take the game in a different direction.
Wait until the end of a rules explanation to ask rules questions
Teaching a game, especially one that is still in development, is an artform. One that every designer needs to learn. Interruptions can cause the designer to lose their place, get flustered, or forget rules, which can ruin the gaming experience. Additionally, if you wait til the end the designer can jot down notes on things he needs to explain better or emphasize in the future.
You are spending your time and energy helping us out and if we can't at least impart you with some fun and good times, we have failed.
